Doulas in Costa Rica - Birth support and prenatal education

Giving birth can be a wonderful experience, but it can also be overwhelming, especially for first-time mothers and even dads. That’s where doulas come in. Doula, derived from the ancient Greek word meaning “a woman who serves,” is a trained professional who provides emotional, physical, and informational support to expectant mothers before, during, and after childbirth. In Costa Rica, doulas are becoming increasingly popular, as more and more women seek personalized and supportive birth experiences.

How to find a Doula that suits you in Costa Rica?

Finding a doula that suits your needs and preferences is essential. The best way to find a doula in Costa Rica is through referrals from friends, family, or medical professionals. You can also search for doulas on online directories, such as DONA International or DoulaMatch.net, where you can filter by location, availability, and other criteria. It’s essential to interview several doulas to find the one that feels right for you.

How much does it cost to give birth in Costa Rica?

The cost of giving birth in Costa Rica varies depending on the hospital or birthing center you choose, as well as the type of delivery and any complications that may arise. However, compared to the United States, Costa Rica’s healthcare system is much more affordable. A natural delivery in a private hospital can cost anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000, while a C-section can cost upwards of $6,000.

Doula in Costa Rica

Do I need a doula if I have my partner for support?

While partners can be a great source of support during birth, doulas bring a different level of experience and expertise to the birthing process. Doulas can provide additional emotional support, offer guidance to partners, and help ensure that the mother's birth preferences are respected.  A  doula does not replace your partners support but instead often supports them as well. Often birth is a long process and having a doula’s support available can help create a nurturing environment for both you and your partner to transition to parenthood.

Does Costa Rica have midwives?

Yes, Costa Rica has midwives, but they are not as common as doulas. Midwives typically work with low-risk pregnancies and provide prenatal, delivery, and postpartum care. A midwife is a medical professional that in a low risk birth can replace a Dr. A doula is a knowledgeable support person. Often midwives and doulas work together. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a doula be present at every birth.  Midwives often attend births once active labour has begun and is responsible for monitoring the baby’s heart rate during labour and ensuring the health of both mom and baby throughout active labour and postpartum period. A midwife can also offer first line pain medications and is responsible for the managing the birth. The doulas role is to support the birthing family with relaxation techniques, position suggestions for ease of labour through physical and emotional support.

What stage of pregnancy should I get a doulas?

It's recommended to hire a doula as early as possible in your pregnancy, ideally during the first or second trimester as they usually book up quickly.  This allows you to establish a relationship with your doula and ensures that they are available. Doulas can take up to 4 client per month. Your doula is on call for you 24-7 during the few weeks leading up to and beyond your due date as only 5% of babies arrive on their “due date”.

Are there any Doulas in the Manuel Antonio area of Costa Rica?

Yes,

My name is Sara, I am a Canadian labour and Delivery RN turned doula so could follow my dream of working with Womens and supporting their empowerment in this beautiful environment of Costa Rica.

I am DONA international trained Doula and prenatal educator and prenatal yoga instructor.

I have a decade of experience in perinatal supports and have attended thousands of births both in Canada and Western Samoa. I am certified in Breastfeeding supports. I continue to be amazed at the strength and power of women and wish to support them and their partners transition into strong united families.

Evidence shows the longer you stay out of hospital the lower the chance of unnecessary labour interventions. Having a doula’s support during labour is proven to assist in this goal. Labouring in the comfort of your own home as long as possible is what we can help with. Our trained professionals are there to support you in your journey to motherhood. We do not replace health care providers and are there as a your personal birth coach as you birth not only your baby but yourself into parenthood. A Doula and helps advocate and and teaches you how to self advocate in the hospital setting. We discuss normal interventions with explanations for why they may be offered so you can make informed choices for you and your baby’s care while in hospital should that be where your birth journey leads you. During labour at home and potentially a home birth a doula offers massage, position changes to help the labour along and encourage baby to be in the best position for delivery. A doula does not replace your partners roll but can help coach your partner to best support you as your labour intensifies.

A doula os able to support you for the essential first hours of your baby’s life. We help with latching baby for their first feed, can offer photos if desired and can help you settle baby for a much needed recovery sleep after the birth.

Latter a Doula will do a home visit to check in and discuss any questions you may have about baby or re visit the north story to help process the events should you feel the need.

Doulas Costa Rica Birth support

How much does a doula cost in Costa Rica?

The cost of a doula in Costa Rica varies depending on the doula's experience and the services they provide. On average, a doula in Costa Rica can cost anywhere from $750 to $1200 for a full package, including prenatal visits, birth support, and postpartum care. However, some doulas may offer their services on a sliding scale based on your financial situation. Post-party’s Doulas often do packages or have hourly rates ranging from $20 to $45/hr depending on experience and needs.

Does a doula help with breastfeeding?

Yes, a doula can help with breastfeeding by providing education and support during and after birth. Doulas can help you understand the benefits of breastfeeding, teach you the proper techniques, and provide emotional support if you encounter any challenges. They can also refer you to a lactation consultant if they observe any issues.

What's the difference between a birth doula  and postpartum doula?

A birth doula provides emotional and physical support building up to and during labour; whereas, a postpartum doula provides support after birth. Prenatal doulas help mothers prepare for labor and delivery, while postpartum doulas help mothers adjust to life with a newborn, providing support with breastfeeding, newborn care, and minor household tasks.

What's the difference between prenatal visits and prenatal education classes?

Prenatal visits are individualized sessions with a doula to discuss the mother's pregnancy, birth preferences, and concerns. Prenatal education classes are group classes that provide information on childbirth, breastfeeding, and newborn care. Both can be valuable resources for expectant mothers. Prenatal visits with your doula are usually consist of two visits in preparation for the birth lasting 2-3 hrs each. You and your partner can go over any questions and preferences at that time. It is an individual focus time for your family to prepare. These sessions are often part of your birth doula package.  Prenatal classes are often done as a weekly series of 2 hr classes both you and your partner can attend. It ,may go over the anatomy and physiology of the birth process, explain common hospital procedures and why they may be suggested. It will go over infant care as well as some suggestions to birth support techniques.  Think of it as boot camp for early parenthood.

When should I call my doula for the birth?

Call you doula as soon as you think you might be in labour even if you don’t feel you need them just yet. This gives them time to prepare and be hyper vigilant with listening for your call. When you feel labour is building up it is important to build in an hour transit time to when you think you may want your doula to be at your side. This does not mean you have to be in active labour, as you may just want to nap in preparation or take a walk around your neighborhood in the early stage, but if you are feeling you need the support your doula is there for you. Keep in mind most first time labour last approximately 24hrs. Every birth is unique as is every baby.

Are Doulas a regulated profession?

No, anyone a an call themselves a Doula, as it just means support person. However, a trained doula is often associated with an organization such as DONA International, where the individual has attended a training program to better equip them top support you through your labour. Often if your insurance offers doula coverage it will require them be a registered doula through a recognized association.

Best Waterfall tour in Costa Rica - Full Day Waterfall Adventure with Paddle 9 If you are spending some time in the Quepos/Manuel Antonio area of Costa Rica and want to see (and jump off of) some of the area's magnificent waterfalls- then a full day waterfall tour is well worth it! Here is an outline of my full day waterfall tour with Paddle 9: I started my day with delicious breakfast at Villas Jacquelina , my eco hotel here in Quepos. After finishing breakfast, I was picked up by my guides directly at my hotel. I was immediately introduced to all the guides and the rest of my group, a family, an elder couple and a younger couple. This warm introduction made me feel very welcome, as I was traveling solo. The tour consists of 3 waterfalls, a lunch, and a beautiful beach stop to end your day. The drive is about an hour to the first waterfall, during which, the guides gave detailed information about the area, its history, and extensive knowledge about its wildlife and agricultural traits. This made the drive very pleasant, along with the stunning views along the coastal road.
