Costa Rica is known for its lush green forests, stunning beaches, and breathtaking natural beauty. The country is home to many hidden gems, one of which is the Potalon River in the Puntarenas region. This river is a true paradise for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and anyone who is looking for a peaceful and serene environment.
The Potalon River is located in the central Pacific region of Costa Rica, close to the city of Quepos. It is surrounded by lush tropical forests and is surrounded by an abundance of wildlife. The river is approximately 12 miles long and is fed by several smaller tributaries, making it one of the most pristine and clean rivers in the country. In addition to its natural beauty, the Potalon River is also a cultural hub for the local community. The river is surrounded by small villages and farms, and the people who live there are known for their hospitality and warmth. It is a great place to learn about the local culture and get a glimpse into the daily lives of the people who call this region home.
Down at the river side you will find a natural adult playground, featuring refreshing river water, cascading waterfalls, and deep pools for jumping into from surrounding cliff edges. Bring a lunch and stay all day to soak up the incredible rejuvenating energy this river emulates. Then head out before sunset to Dominical beach where you can enjoy an epic sunset with a cold imperial. This day trip will feed your soul and rarely disappoints.
Just 25 kilometers south of Quepos, right off the main highway, you will see signs for Portalón. Travel down this paved/unpaved road that parallels a beautiful fresh water river, to a jungle escape that matches the beauty this area has to offer. Park at the end of the unpaved road right near where the eco-reservation starts.
If your traveling by bus from Quepos or Manuel Antonio, you will need to catch a collectivo bus thats headed south to Dominical, Uvita, or San Isidro and that can drop you off along the way. This isn't an easy task but it is possible. You would need to ask the driver to drop you off Portalon. From there, you will have to walk through the small village to get to a river.
